The Highest Quality Metallurgical Coal in the World
Operating since 1975, Oak Grove has spent five decades producing a premium low-volatile hard coking coal that the world's steelmakers rely on. We are mining the Blue Creek seam in Alabama's Warrior Basin and shipping to mills across the globe.
The seam
Oak Grove mines the Blue Creek seam, roughly 1,000 feet underground. It is one of the most sought-after coking coals in the world — consistently low in ash and sulphur, with the coking properties that allows blast furnaces to run harder and cleaner. Coal of this quality is not made twice. What is in the ground is what there is.
The operation
A single longwall face, supported by several continuous miner development sections, produces approximately 2.6 million tonnes a year. Raw coal is washed at our on-site preparation plant, then loaded to barge on the Black Warrior River or railed directly to the Port of Mobile for export. From pit to port, we control the value chain.
The people
Oak Grove has been worked by generations of Alabama mining families. Many of our people are the second or third generation in their family to work underground at Oak Grove. That continuity is not sentiment — it is why the mine runs. Skill of this kind is passed down, not hired in.
The next fifty years
Under Makuria's ownership, Oak Grove is being invested in for the long term: modernized longwall automation, preparation plant upgrades, and a safety and monitoring programme built in-house and now used across the industry. The seam has decades of life left.
